Geo Wyeth plays the character Bloody Mary from the 1958 musical film South Pacific. The story is based on the American academic James Michener’s Tales of the South Pacific that were inspired by his visit to an “unpleasant village, called Baliha’i, populated by scrawny residents and only one pig.” This musical contributes to a larger history of old Hollywood films in which westerners are stationed on exotic islands in which love meets racism and drama ensues. Bloody Mary, described from Muchener’s colonialist perspective as being “small, almost toothless, and stained with red betel juice,” will be given new life in this contemporary retelling. With a costume skeleton by Jeannine Han and an airplane sculpture made in collaboration with James J.A. Mercer.
